The Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting for the LakesWater Quality Society for the 2022 year will be held on Sunday 19th March 2023 from 10.00 am to 12.30 pm at the Tikitapu Room, Sudima Hotel, Eruera Street, Rotorua.

The meeting will only be at the venue - there will be no online option like last year due to the cost of online hosting.

Presentations to follow the formal part of the meeting include:

1. Ian McLean, Life Member of the LakesWater Quality Society: "What is its Task?"
2. Dr Jonathan West, Environmental Historian: "The interaction between land, people and lakes - with reference to the Rotorua Te Arawa Lakes".

Ian was chair of LWQS and led the Society in its re-birth as the LakesWater Quality Society and the initiation of the Rotorua Lakes restoration programme. Ian has had a varied career which has included MP for the Tarawera Electorate 1978 -1990; Chair of the Earthquake Commission; under the World Bank helping set up earthquake insurance schemes in Turkey and Romania; an economist with the Ministry of Agriculture; farmer; Chair of the Mahi Tahi Akoranga Trust and Ian led the review of the Civil Defence Emergency management response to the 22 February 2011 Christchurch Earthquakes.

Dr Jonathan West is an Environmental Historian and his research and writing explores the environmental history of Aotearoa New Zealand and he has authored a book "The Face of Nature: An Environmental History of the Otago Peninsula. Jonathan is the Judith Binney Fellow 2022 and currently preparing a manuscript "Mirrors on the Land: Histories of New Zealand's Lakes' which explores how Maori and Pakeha have lived with Lakes and how that relationship has shaped their histories. This book studies a range of major lakes including Lake Taupo, Rotorua Te Arawa Lakes, Lake Wanaka, Lake Manapouri.along with others.

The Financial Report will be presented verbally as the final Financial Statements are not currently available.

Member leaving the committee:

Stuart Corson has decided not to seek re-election for the 2023 year. Stuart has been on the Executive Committee for the last 5 years and has made a significant contribution to the Society's activities. During 2022, Stuart led a self-learning process for the Executive Committee to enhance the Committee's knowledge and understanding of the key scientific concepts regarding water quality, catchment management, impacts of climate change and biology of lake ecosystems. This was a highly useful process as a lead into our Symposium in November 2022.
